Talking about making the leap from top notch hatter to neophyte hotel designer, Philip Treacy explains that “Good design can enhance any experience, from wearing a beautiful hat to walking into a beautiful hotel.” In describing his approach to design for the incredibly imaginative g-hotel, Treacy claims that twenty-first century travellers are discerning creatures seeking to escape and indulge our desire for comfort and luxury. Bland, corporate hotels simply no longer suffice. Treacy asserts that the best hotels have always managed to convey a sense of place, as well as of occasion.
One of seven brothers and a sister, Treacy hails from Ahascragh, in County Galway. He couldn’t resist the invitation from a Galway-based developer to design an elegant and glamorous hotel experience in his bohemian and artistic seaside hometown. Galway is a port city that has long embraced its ‘worldliness’, rather than just its Irishness, and is different from almost anywhere else in Ireland. Given the free reign he needed be different, Treacy took things to the edge and pushed for a totally new kind of hotel experience. Working in conjunction with Irish architects and designers Douglas Wallace the g hotel brings together an eclectic mix of styles - from baroque to contemporary, and many places in between - to create an overall effect that seeks to surprise as well as to delight. An homage to supermodel glamour (the penthouse is named for Canadian runway titan Linda Evangelista) the design saturated spaces and over the top textures are straight from fashion fantasies.
Philip Treacy explains, “after all a good hat, no matter how much it costs, has the ability to make the wearer feel a million dollars. Walking into the g has the same effect. It is like walking onto a film set. Each guest will respond to this experience in a quite different way but, for each of them, it is their moment on the red carpet.”
